About 25 kilometers west of the center of Beijing in the Mentougou District (门头沟区) lies an historically significant and picturesque little village called Cuandixia (爨底下). The first character in this village’s name, if I remember correctly, is one of the most (if not the most) stroke-intensive characters in the Chinese dictionary. At 30 strokes, it may leave you amused to know this hieroglyph simply means ‘to cook.’ Or, as a noun, it refers to ‘an earthen kitchen stove.’ Anyway, the village itself, while slightly commercial, is a very welcome escape from the bustle of the big city.
